Steward's Report
Pre–race samples were taken from Dewana Fernando and Hector Fawley.
Fred Rose fell when rounding the turn out of the back straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an injury to the right hind fibula. A 7 day stand down period was imposed.
A post-race sample was taken from American Queen - winner of the event
A post–race blood sample was taken from Dewana Fernando – placed 3rd in the event. A post-race hair sample was unable to be obtained.
Stewards opened and adjourned an inquiry regarding a hair sample being unable to be obtained from the greyhound Dewana Fernando. Stewards advised handler Darryl Hamilton that Dewana Fernando would be ineligible from competing in an event until a hair sample was provided which was not in breach of any rules, pursuant to GAR 139(4)(b).
Supplementary Report 22/02/24: Stewards concluded their inquiry into the circumstances of the greyhound Dewana Fernando having hair removed from a majority of its body and tail at Sandown Park on 18/01/2024 and the provisions ofGAR 156(i)(ii). Urine and blood samples were taken from Dewana Fernando at the race meeting at Sandown Park on18/01/2024 but a hair sample was unable to be taken. A hair sample was later able to be obtained on 25/01/24 and the stand-down imposed on Dewana Fernando pursuant to GAR 139(4)(b) was lifted permitting Dewana Fernando to return to racing. All samples have now returned Not Detected results.Stewards re-commenced the inquiry on 22/02/24 at Sandown Park and heard verbal and written submissions from Trainer Brendan Dewan and Mr Matthew Dewan. After considering the circumstances of the hair removal, Mr Dewan's forthright manner and cooperation with the Stewards, his new understanding of his obligations under the relevant rules and his excellent record, Stewards issued an official warning under GAR 156(i)(ii) and provided Mr Dewan with a detailed outline of participants obligations when removing hair from any greyhound.
