GRV Stewards today inquired into an incident that occurred in the kennelling area at the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club on Thursday 8 February 2018, shortly after Race 2. After taking evidence from GRV Stewards Bettess, Rea, Watson and licensed Trainer Mr Greg Turnbull, the Stewards issued a charge to Mr Turnbull under GAR 86 (q). The specifics of the charge were that shortly after Race 2 on Thursday 8 February 2018, at the Warrnambool Greyhound Race Club Meeting held on that day, Mr Greg Turnbull, being a registered Trainer with GRV, engaged in conduct that was detrimental to the interests/image of greyhound racing by raising his voice and remonstrating aggressively in the kennelling area. Mr Turnbull pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $200. When determining penalty, stewards took into consideration Mr Turnbull’s record, his guilty plea, his personnel antecedence and the forthright manner in which he conducted himself before the Stewards today. Against these factors, stewards considered the need for general and specific deterrence, the poor nature of the incident, the incident was openly viewed by other industry participants and the message that uncivil behaviour such as this, is not acceptable from licensed persons and will not be tolerated by GRV Officials. Blackpool Alexis was vetted following the event. It was reported that the greyhound sustained a carpal sprain of the left wrist, and an abraded left hind paw pad. A five-day stand down period was imposed.

Stewards spoke to Ms Margaret Salvatore, the trainer of Puffin' Stuff, regarding the length of time the greyhound has had between races. Puffin' Stuff last raced on 19 November 2017. Ms Salvatore stated that the greyhound had been recovering from a right hock injury.

Stewards spoke to Mr Zoran Aleksov, the trainer of Splash Da Cash, regarding the length of time the greyhound has had between races. Splash Da Cash last raced on 10 December 2017.Mr Aleksov stated that the greyhound had been recovering from a right hock injury.

Splash Da Cash was quick to begin. One Mississippi jumped awkwardly and was very slow to begin (3L).

Clavash checked off the heels of Swiftly Swift approaching the first turn. Roman Blue Jay galloped on the heels of Jackson's Girl on the first turn, checking Jackson's Girl. One Mississippi and Roman Blue Jay collided heavily on the first turn, checking Roman Blue Jay. Puffin' Stuff and Dynamite Jackson collided approaching the home turn.

Roman Blue Jay was vetted following the event. It was reported that the greyhound sustained an abrasion to the rump. A three-day stand down period was imposed.

Stewards spoke to Ms Marelene Schmidt, the trainer of Invictus Legion, regarding the length of time the greyhound has had between races. Invictus Legion last raced on 10 December 2017. Ms Schmidt stated that the greyhound had been recovering from a back muscle injury. Ms Schmidt also declared a new weight of 34.0kg for the greyhound in accordance with GAR 39(2). Invictus Legion last raced at 35.8kg.

Smudger Smiff and Lektra Rival were quick to begin. Invictus Legion and Just Tooie were slow to begin.

Bageera and Trium collided on the first turn. Just Tooie, Bageera and Trium collided on the first turn. Invictus Legion and Kalgoorlie Kid collided several times approaching the home turn.

MEETING COMMENTS

Satisfactory Trial Results - Mystic Riot trialled over the 390m from box one, weight 28.4kg, the greyhound was placed second in a field of four. The time of the trial was 22.25, the greyhound was beaten by a margin of 1.5L. Mystic Riot was not cleared.

Satisfactory Trial Results (GAR 77A) - Stewards spoke to Mr Wayne Vassallo, the trainer of Blazing Obsidian, regarding the length of time since the greyhound last raced. Blazing Obsidian last raced on 5 August 2017. Mr Vassallo stated that the greyhound had been seasonal and then changed kennels. Pursuant to GAR 77A, Blazing Obsidian trialled over the 450m from box one, weight 29.4kg, the greyhound was placed second in a field of four. The time of the trial was 25.17, the greyhound was beaten by a margin of 6.5L. Blazing Obsidian was cleared.
