Steward's Report
Banjo Boy was a late scratching at 7.18pm by Order of Stewards.
Preliminary:
Stewards were advised by Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) yesterday Wednesday 13th November, regarding three samples recently taken from Mr. Virtue’s greyhounds namely Banjo Boy (Sandown 19/9/13 and Sandown 26/9/13) and Banjo Star (Sandown 3/10/13) indicating the presence of the prohibited substance “Cimetidine”.
Confirmation of these three samples will be determined upon the testing of the reserve and control samples.
Mr. Virtue was advised of the analyst findings during a kennel inspection conducted earlier today 14th November by GRV Steward Mr. Ron Matthews and Dr. Steven Karamatic.
During the course of the inspection Mr. Virtue stated that the greyhound Banjo Boy was prescribed a substance on veterinary advice, with the usual administration taking place on a daily basis with the evening meal. Mr. Virtue also advised that the administration was consistent and had taken place in relation to these three samples.
Tonight’s investigation:
Upon arrival tonight Stewards directed that a pre-race sample be taken from Banjo Boy which was taken prior to kennelling.
Stewards then conducted an inquiry with Mr. Virtue in relation to the presentation of Banjo Boy and the circumstances regarding the treatment of the greyhound leading up to tonight.
After considering the evidence and Mr. Virtue’s submission, Stewards acting under Greyhound Australasia Rule 20(4)(b) which states:
“R20 Stewards control and regulation of race meeting:
(4) The Stewards may order any greyhound to be withdrawn from an Event-
(b) for any reason which in the opinion of the Stewards is in the best interest of greyhound racing.”
Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the greyhound BANJO BOY at 7.18pm as they were not reasonably satisfied that the greyhound was presented free of a prohibited substance.
As a result, in the opinion of the Stewards, and in the best interest of greyhound racing, the greyhound was withdrawn.
A hearing into the matters will be conducted at a date to fixed.
