En Kay Gee and Crymelon Fettle were quick to begin. Grey Mater was slow to begin. Laboomba checked off Grey Mater approaching the first turn. Grey Mater checked off Stylish Label on the first turn. Stylish Label clipped the heels of Kardinia Boy approaching the home turn, severely checking Chief Winslow, Golden Swan, Kardinia Boy and Stylish Label, and causing Grey Mater to fall. Crymelon Fettle, Labooma and Golden Swan raced wide on the home turn.
