Steward's Report
Feelin' Free was quick to begin. Big Duke was slow to begin.
Dr. Hopper checked off the heels of Obscurus and subsequently collided with Maximos on the turn out of the front straight. Dr. Hopper fell as a result of the collision and Maximos subsequently pulled up out of the race in the back straight. After falling and taking no further competitive part in the event, Dr. Hopper jumped the inside rail in the back straight and ran unsecured through the in-field. As a result of this, this event was converted from a catching pen finish to a finish-on lure, in the interests of the safety of all greyhounds engaged in the event. Dr. Hopper and Maximos both underwent post-race veterinary examinations:
- Dr. Hopper - no apparent injury was reported.
- Maximos - found to have a left metacarpal fracture. A 60 day stand down period was imposed.
Feelin' Free led throughout before beginning to lose ground from the turn out of the back straight and subsequently collapsing after the winning post. The greyhound was pronounced deceased by the On–Track Veterinarian. Routine samples were taken and a necropsy will be conducted, in accordance with GAR 43.
The announcement of the All Clear was delayed for the Stewards to review the race footage and to ensure that the conversion to the finish-on lure and the unsecured greyhound in the in-field had not affected the outcome of the event. After viewing the footage and acting on their own observations, the Stewards were comfortably satisfied that no greyhounds were materially affected by the change in race circumstances and the All Clear was posted on the official numbers of 8-2-6-4.
